It is with a sense of relief and closure that we report that the name of Peter McKay who was killed in the Falklands War, has now at last been added to the War Memorial in his native town.

We strongly recommend Banff Anecdotes and Other Stories by Dr J. Douglas Hunter. Dr Hunter is one of our far-flung members. He went to primary and secondary school in Banff, then to Aberdeen University, where he graduated in medicine in 1949. He was a consultant anaesthetist at Newcastle General Hospital. He is also a musician. In his retirement he continued to conduct choirs and orchestras round Newcastle.
Banff Anecdotes and Other Stories is a great fund of stories. Anyone with an interest in Banff will be entertained, learn some things they didn\'t know before, and have pleasant memories brought back. It is a truly delightful book, very nicely produced, with lots of pictures as well. It costs £7.99, and you can get it either from Alistair Mason, the Secretary of BPHS, or from \'Chapter and Verse\' in Low Street, Banff. The postage in the UK will not be more than £2.
Dr Hunter very kindly is giving the profits from the book to the Society. To maximise these, buy it from the Secretary, but if \'Chapter and Verse\' is more convenient, go there - they are good friends of ours and to be encouraged.

THE P.F.ANSON EXHIBITION
Our Society, along with the Banffshire Maritime and Heritage Association, have an exhibition on in Banff Museum, connected with the COAST Festival. This is on the life and work of P F Anson. Do have a look.
PETER FREDERICK ANSON (1889-1975)
Peter F Anson was baptised Frederick Charles Anson on 7 October 1889 in St George’s Chapel, Windsor – his grandfather having been Canon of that Royal Chapel for over 40 years.
On becoming an Anglican monk on Caldey Island off South Wales in 1910, Frederick Anson took as his patron St Peter and from then on adopted the name of Peter for all professional purposes. Peter F Anson remained with the monastic community until 1924.
Having broken his association with Caldey, Peter F Anson turned to writing and illustrating works on the fishing industry, becoming a recognised expert on British fishing communities and their craft. His detailed watercolours and line-drawings were as carefully researched as the statistics which recorded the decline of the fishing industry throughout his lifetime.
In addition Peter F Anson was co-founder of the Apostleship of the Sea in 1921 and in 1936 of the Royal Society of Marine Artists.
Peter F Anson eventually settled in the North East of Scotland, residing from 1938 to 1951 at Harbour Head, 2 Low Shore, Macduff, and, following a brief spell away from the North East, at 13A Low Shore, Macduff. On leaving Macduff in April 1958, Anson’s remaining years were spent at Ramsgate Abbey, Ferryden near Montrose, Caldey Island and finally Sancta Maria Abbey, Nunraw, East Lothian. Peter F Anson died in 1975.
If you want to read some of Anson’s books, Banff Library has laid in a stock, available to borrow.
A collection of Peter Anson’s paintings is on permanent display at Buckie Library.

We have been hampered by bad weather, but have put out all the easy ones. Old houses, full of character, are sometimes hard to pinpoint. Some houses don't have visible names or numbers. Some have boarded up letter-boxes. There was a fashion a hundred years ago for small letter-boxes, that won't take an unbendy A5 envelope. Our respect for postmen grows. We'll get them all there in time. We must sometimes compare the house description on the Historic Scotland website, and see if it tallies with the building in front of us.
The work is a challenge and a delight, looking closely at all these wonderful buildings. Banff is a great town!
